ABSTRACT

Background and Purpose: Physical examination (PE) is an important element used in the diagnostic process. This cross-sectional and methodological study was conducted methodologically to test cross-cultural and linguistic adaptation of the Turkish version of the Physical Examination Attitudes and Practices Scale (PEAPS) and to test the reliability and validity of Turkish nurses. Methods: The study was carried out with a methodological, cross-sectional design, with 372 nurses working in different departments at a state hospital. Results: The content validity index was found to be .87. Item-total score correlation coefficients were above .30; Cronbach's alpha was found to be .89. Conclusions: The instrument is an acceptable, valid, and reliable tool in Turkish for evaluating the attitudes and practices toward PE. Attitudes toward PE can be examined by health professionals working in different fields and cultures.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Mental health research exists for university students in the areas of prevalence and association of depression, internet addiction and healthy lifestyle behaviors. However, the studies examining prevalence rates and these relationships in athlete university students are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between depression, healthy lifestyle behaviors and internet addiction among athlete university students in Turkey. Methods: A cross-sectional design was conducted, measuring depression using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, healthy lifestyle behaviors (HPLP-II), and internet addiction (YIAT-SF). Predictive factors associated with depressive symptoms were estimated using binary logistic regression. Results: Of the 501 participants, 61.3% were male, with a mean age of 21.45 years (SD: 3.19). Student-athletes were at risk of depressive symptoms (76.4%), internet addiction (34.4%) and had moderate healthy lifestyle behaviors (130.41 ± 22.93). No significant differences were found for age, smoking, time spent on social network, number of sports days, number of social networks use for depressive symptoms (p > 0.05), however significant differences were found for depressive symptoms by sex and living with family status (p < 0.05). Pathological internet addiction (OR: 12.74, 95% CI: 2.91-55.77) and low spiritual growth (OR: 0.854, 95% CI: 0.79-0.92) were found to be predictors of depressive symptoms within the athlete university students (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The athlete university students are at increased risk for depressive symptoms and internet addiction and decreased healthy lifestyle behaviors. It is essential to establish programs to improve the mental health of students in universities and to strengthen the psychological counseling services offered to students. These findings can assist universities in establishing effective measures to improve mental health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence and related risk factors of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on studies on the condition conducted in Turkey. METHODS: The study is a systematic review and meta-analysis and was conducted over the period November-December 2017 by performing a search of the Turkish and English literature. The international databases were accessed using the keywords "gestational diabetes" and "Turkey" and the national databases were scanned using the word groups, "gestational diabetes", "diabetes in pregnancy", "pregnancy and diabetes," and "pregnancy diabetes". Forty-one complete articles on research carried out in Turkey over the period 2004-2016 and published in 2006-2018 on the prevalence of GDM and/or a reported risk factor were included in the study. Combined percentage calculations were employed to determine GDM prevalence. RESULTS: It was found in this systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies examined that out of the total of 50,767 pregnant women included in the studies, 3891 had GDM. Based on these data, combined GDM prevalence was calculated as 7.7% (range: 1.9-27.9%). It was observed that the highest combined GDM prevalence was 17.6% in the black Sea Region and the lowest was 5.1% in the Central Anatolian Region. Fourteen risk factors had been reported as statistically significant in the studies included in the systematic review. The most commonly reported of these was advanced maternal age, being overweight prior to pregnancy, gaining weight in pregnancy, diabetes in the family, a history of GDM or giving birth to a large baby. CONCLUSIONS: It was observed in this meta-analysis that the prevalence of GDM in Turkey is notably high and risk factors are similar to what has been reported in current international literature. The continuation of routine screening tests to detect GDM may contribute to controlling the condition while ensuring that risk groups take special preventive measures and mother-child health is protected. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Results of this study might be used in the organization of prenatal care, especially high-risk pregnant women for GDM. Nursing researchers and health care managers should consider this situation in the implementing of prenatal care serving.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Exploring the information and support needs of parents with hearing impairment in habilitation process. The effects of variables such as duration of hearing aid use and habilitation (duration of intervention) and the number of hearing impaired individuals in family are also considered during the evaluation. METHODS: Sixty-five parents of children between 24 and 348 months of age (median: 80) participated in this study by returning the completed in The Family Needs Survey. Age at diagnosis of deafness varied from 1 to 84 months of age (median: 16). The duration of hearing aid use was 8-252 months (median: 24) and the duration of intervention was 2-176 months (median: 36). In view of the fact that the family dynamics might have effects on the type and amount of the needs of parents, the number of siblings (none, two or more siblings) and the presence of hearing impaired individuals apart from their child was also explored. RESULTS: The parental needs with regard to different topics such as general information, hearing loss, communication-services and educational resources, family and social support, childcare and community services, financial were evaluated separately. The needs of parents participating in a multi-dimensional Auditory-Verbal intervention program differed by their preferential demands. The duration of intervention was found significantly correlated with the amount of information needs related with other conditions their children may have, explaining their children's hearing problem to others, locating good baby-sitters and day-care programs for their children and transportation (p< or =0.05). It was also found that the long-termed continuing intervention generates additional psychotherapeutic, social and financial needs for the parents. No significant correlation was found between hearing impaired individuals existence with the type and amount of family needs (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings support the positive effect of persistent and long-term Auditory-Verbal therapy and Counseling approach which incorporates parents as inalienable members in all rehabilitation process. Creating an adequate and appropriate educational environment by considering individualized needs and family dynamics in a long term and persistent Auditory-Verbal therapy and Counseling approach are all equally important. In addition to a team approach to management, with parents taking a major role in the habilitation process, and all these will lead to a much better outcome.
